Vehicles seized after Lancaster Farms contraband crackdown

Friday, 11 March 2011

Over 80 visitors to Lancaster Farms young offenders institute were searched by police in a crackdown on contraband items making their way into the establishment - and items seized as a result.

The activity was carried out as part of regular checks on those entering the Lancaster Young Offenders Institute, to prevent items such as drugs or mobile phones being smuggled inside by visitors.

During a two-hour period on Wednesday, 27 vehicles and 82 people were searched by officers and three vehicles were seized as a result. Three endorsable and five non endorsable fines were also issued and two people were reported for summons for driving offences.

“It is important that contraband items, such as drugs and mobile phones, are prevented from entering the establishment," notes Inspector Geoff Tagg from Lancashire Police.

"Those visiting Lancaster YOI need to be aware that if they are asked to bring a contraband item into the prison they are committing an offence by carrying out this request and checks will be made to ensure this does not happen.”
