Fishing stocks had already decreased markedly before the EU was even created. <br /><br />Much of EU fishery policy is designed to make fishing more sustainable, often fighting against the interests of the fishing industry which would often rather continue to overfish in the short-term than to have a long-term future. The quota policy is one example, but in future will need to be balanced against this problem of discarding excess and by-catch.<br /><br />It might be comforting to think that Brussels bureaucrats and red tape are responsible for the collapse of cod stocks, for example. But really, this is due to fishermen lobbying to keep their jobs, and due to large numbers of people eating cod!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
